Rabbi’s August 2017 Column

It’s hard to believe that summer has nearly come and gone. It’s already August and even though the High Holy Days don’t start until the middle of September this year, all the normal preparations for the coming year are well under way. By the end of this month, the Religious School teachers will have met and set up for the new school year, Shir Yehudah will have rehearsed for and already played for the first Musical Shabbat of Season 11, and the High Holy Day choir will have already rehearsed twice for Rosh Hashanah. By the way: we’re always looking for new musicians and singers. If you’re interested we’d love for you to join us at any of the rehearsals. Shir Yehudah rehearsals start on Monday, August 14th, and choir rehearsals for the High Holy Days start Tuesday, August 22nd.

There are also a number of unique service opportunities this month. Traditional Services have been moved, now, to the second Shabbat of month, so this month they will be on August 12th. On Friday night, August 18th, we will install our new Board of Directors, including our new president, Jillian Diner. On Sunday, August 20th, there will be a Memorial Concert for Marianne Bern, at Cottage Grove Place, hosted by her talented and musical children Cantor Jennifer Bern-Vogel and Dan Bern. While, Friday, August 25th, brings with it the first Musical Shabbat of the year. Finally, though technically not this month, we will finish the summer with outdoor services on September 1st.

It’s been a relatively quiet summer for Temple Judah, but as you can see things are about to pick up. Enjoy yourselves, stay cool, and come and join us when you can.

B’shalom,
Rabbi Todd
