As we step into 5786, I want to wish each of you a Shanah Tovah – a year of health, blessings, and peace. The High Holy Days give us the opportunity to pause, reflect, and begin again. They remind us that every year, and every day, we are invited to write a new chapter in our lives, both individually and as a community.
And so, just as soon as Yom Kippur concludes, we are called into the joy of Sukkot. The shift is striking: from the solemn introspection of the Days of Awe to the laughter, singing, and togetherness of dwelling in the sukkah. Judaism here, is teaching us that holiness is found not only in prayer and repentance, but also in celebration and simple acts of hospitality: welcoming guests, sharing a meal in our sukkot, and feeling the breeze on our faces.
The sukkah itself is a fragile structure, open to the elements, reminding us of both the uncertainty and the beauty of life. We cannot control everything, but we can choose to face life’s unpredictability together, holding one another up, strengthening our community, and building a shelter of peace around those we love.
As we begin this new year, let us carry with us the hope of Rosh Hashanah, the forgiveness of Yom Kippur, and the joy of Sukkot. May our synagogue not only be a place of learning and prayer, but also of warmth, laughter, and connection. May the year ahead be sweet and fulfilling, and may we all find happiness and peace.
