President’s Column October 2018

Happy Fall and Chag Sameach!

It was great to see everyone who joined us for High Holiday services. Both Traditional and Reform services went well and we had a record number of kids at our Children’s Service! Our Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast consisted of an array of varied dishes – it was wonderful. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the meal.

Do you know about PJ Library? It’s a fantastic program in which kids ages 6 months thru 8 years can receive a free book each month that celebrates Jewish values. The books are age-appropriate and often topical for upcoming holidays. Funding for the books to our community come from nationwide PJ Library program donors and a contribution from Temple Judah. I signed up my currently 1 ½ year old son as soon as he was born, and we began receiving books in the mail when he turned 6 months old. One of my favorites we’ve received so far, which is suitable any time of the year, is titled “Take Care” by Madelyn Rosenburg. The message is about about taking care of the earth and its inhabitants. “Take care of the world, of the mountains and trees, tend to the world all the bumbles and bees.” But protecting wildlife, picking up litter, and tending physically to the world is not quite enough. “Light up the world with the words that you choose.” Being kind to others, avoiding harsh words, and healing with tikkun olam is just as important. “Share the wide world, it belongs to us all.” It not only belongs to all of us, but also to future generations who have yet to experience its beauty. What a great message from a toddler book! Go to https://pjlibrary.org to sign up your kids for free books.

Thanks to everyone who joined in our Fall Grounds Day and Sukkah Building! It was a great opportunity to “take care” of our grounds and build community while assembling the sukkah.

In October, we have two events dedicated to cancer awareness. The first is the Especially For You Race, where many of us have joined the Temple Judah team in honor of congregants, families, and friends who have been affected by breast cancer. Two weekends later, we’re hosting the Sisterly Advice session, presented by the NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative, giving women potentially life-saving information about ovarian cancer.

Check the bulletin for more details on all our events coming up this month!

Shalom,

Jill
